Egg Freezing Process at Janitva IVF Centre: Step-by-Step Guide

Egg freezing, also known as oocyte cryopreservation, is a fertility preservation procedure in which a woman’s eggs are collected and frozen for potential future use. At Janitva IVF Centre, the process involves medical evaluation, ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval and advanced freezing techniques to help preserve reproductive options for the future.

H2: Step 1 – Initial Consultation and Fertility Assessment

The first step is a consultation with a fertility specialist. Your doctor will review your medical history, menstrual cycle, reproductive goals and overall health.

Tests such as Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH), antral follicle count (AFC) through ultrasound and other necessary investigations may be recommended to assess ovarian reserve and plan treatment.

H2: Step 2 – Ovarian Stimulation

Fertility medications are prescribed to stimulate the ovaries to develop multiple follicles containing eggs.

During this stage, the doctor monitors follicular growth through ultrasound scans and, when needed, blood tests. The medication and its duration are individualized for each patient.

H2: Step 3 – Trigger Injection for Egg Maturation

When the follicles reach the appropriate stage of development, a trigger injection is administered to support final egg maturation.

The timing of this injection is important because egg retrieval is usually scheduled approximately 34–36 hours afterward, depending on the treatment protocol.

H2: Step 4 – Egg Retrieval Procedure

Egg retrieval is a minimally invasive procedure generally performed under sedation or anaesthesia.

Using ultrasound guidance, the fertility specialist collects eggs from the ovarian follicles with a fine needle. The procedure usually takes around 15–30 minutes, although the duration may vary.

After retrieval, the patient is monitored for a short period before going home, provided recovery is uncomplicated.

H2: Step 5 – Egg Assessment in the Laboratory

The collected eggs are examined by the embryology team. The number of eggs retrieved may differ from the number of mature eggs suitable for freezing.

Only eggs that meet the laboratory’s maturity criteria are selected for cryopreservation.

H2: Step 6 – Egg Freezing Using Vitrification

Mature eggs are frozen using a rapid-freezing technique called vitrification. This method helps minimize ice crystal formation during the freezing process.

The eggs are stored in specialized cryogenic storage systems under carefully controlled conditions for potential future use.

H2: Step 7 – Safe Storage and Future Use

Frozen eggs can remain stored according to applicable regulations, clinic policies and the patient’s consent arrangements.

When the patient decides to attempt pregnancy, the eggs can be thawed. Those that survive thawing may be fertilized using intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), and suitable resulting embryos may be transferred to the uterus.

H2: Who Should Consider Egg Freezing?

Egg freezing may be considered by women who:

  • Wish to postpone pregnancy for personal or professional reasons.
  • Are preparing for medical treatments that may affect fertility.
  • Have certain medical conditions that could affect ovarian function.
  • Want to explore fertility preservation after discussing its potential benefits and limitations with a fertility specialist.

H2: Is Egg Freezing Successful?

The outcome depends on several factors, particularly the woman’s age at the time of egg freezing, the number of mature eggs stored and the quality of the eggs. Egg freezing can preserve reproductive options, but it does not guarantee a future pregnancy or live birth.
