Your Path to Parenthood
Preoperative Consultation
Meet with your surgeon to discuss your medical history, current medications, and the reasons for the laparoscopy. This is an opportunity to ask questions and understand the procedure.
Preoperative Preparation
Follow the specific instructions provided by your healthcare team. These may include fasting for several hours before surgery and arranging for someone to drive you home afterward.
Anaesthesia Administration
On the day of the surgery, you'll receive general anaesthesia to ensure you're asleep and pain-free during the procedure. In some cases, local anaesthesia with sedation may be used, depending on the complexity of the surgery.
Creating the Surgical Access
The surgeon makes a small incision near the navel and inserts a trocar, a specialised instrument that allows access to the abdominal cavity. Carbon dioxide gas is introduced to inflate the abdomen, providing a clear view and space to operate.
Inserting the Laparoscope
A laparoscope—a thin tube with a high-resolution camera and light—is inserted through the trocar. This device transmits real-time images to a monitor, enabling the surgeon to examine internal organs.
Performing the Procedure
A laparoscope—a thin tube with a high-resolution camera and light—is inserted through the trocar. This device transmits real-time images to a monitor, enabling the surgeon to examine internal organs.
Closing the Incisions
After the procedure is completed, the instruments are removed, carbon dioxide is released, and the small incisions are closed with sutures or surgical glue. Bandages are then applied to protect the sites.
Recovery and Postoperative Care
You'll be monitored in a recovery area until the effects of anaesthesia wear off. Most patients go home the same day. Postoperative instructions may include rest, pain management, and guidelines on resuming normal activities.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
■ What is laparoscopy?
Laparoscopy, often referred to as minimally invasive or keyhole surgery, is a surgical procedure that allows doctors to examine and operate on organs inside the abdomen and pelvis through small incisions. A laparoscope—a thin tube with a camera and light—is inserted through these incisions, providing real-time images to guide the surgery.
■ What conditions can be diagnosed or treated with laparoscopy?
Laparoscopy is used to diagnose and treat various conditions, including endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, fibroids, ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancies, and infertility. It can also be employed for procedures like tubal ligation and to assess certain cancers.
■ How should I prepare for a laparoscopy?
Preparation may include fasting several hours before the procedure, arranging transportation home, and discussing any medications with your doctor, as some may need to be adjusted or paused. Your healthcare provider will provide specific preoperative instructions tailored to your situation.
■ What type of anaesthesia is used during laparoscopy?
Laparoscopy is typically performed under general anaesthesia, which ensures you are asleep and pain-free during the procedure. However, depending on the complexity of the surgery and your medical history, local anaesthesia with sedation may be used in some cases
■ What are the risks associated with laparoscopy?
While generally safe, laparoscopy carries some risks, including bleeding, infection, and injury to internal organs. However, these complications are rare. Your surgeon will discuss potential risks before the procedure to ensure you are fully informed.
■ How long is the recovery period after laparoscopy?
Recovery time varies but is typically shorter than with open surgery. Most patients can resume normal activities within a week, though strenuous activities should be avoided for a few weeks. Your doctor will provide personalised guidance based on the specifics of your procedure.
■ Will there be visible scars after laparoscopy?
Laparoscopy involves small incisions, usually 0.5 to 1.5 centimetres, which result in minimal scarring. These scars often fade over time and are less noticeable than those from traditional open surgery.
■ Can laparoscopy be used for biopsy purposes?
During a laparoscopy, surgeons can take tissue samples (biopsies) from organs within the abdomen or pelvis for further examination, aiding in accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
■ Is hospitalisation required after a laparoscopy?
Laparoscopy is often performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing patients to go home the same day. However, depending on the complexity of the surgery and individual health factors, an overnight stay may be recommended.
■ How soon can I return to work after a laparoscopy?
Many patients return to work within a few days to a week after the procedure, depending on the nature of their job and how they feel. It’s advisable to discuss your specific situation with your healthcare provider to determine an appropriate timeline for resuming work and other activities.
